IFPRI 2020 Vision
Doctoral Students Competition
Call for
Applications
Even if the world
achieves the poverty and hunger Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and
halves the proportion of poor and hungry people by 2015, millions of the
world’s poorest and hungry people will be left behind. Moving these people
out of poverty and hunger in a sustainable way will require new and
different action.
The International Food
Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Government of China (State
Council Leading Group Office on Poverty Alleviation and Development) are
organizing a high-level international conference on “Taking Action for the
World’s Poor and Hungry People” on October 17-19, 2007, in Beijing,
China. This conference will bring together leaders in government, civil
society, development organizations, business, and research from around the
world to deliberate on innovative ways to accelerate the reduction of
poverty, vulnerability, and hunger.
An international
competition is being held to identify and invite leading doctoral students
working on poverty and hunger to this conference.
PhD students working
on issues related to poverty and hunger are encouraged to submit an
application outlining their research and the relevance of their work to
the theme of the conference. Around ten applicants will be selected as
IFPRI 2020 Vision Doctoral Students and invited to attend the Beijing
conference in October. A lump sum of $2000 will be given to each non-China
based selected student to cover costs of travel to the conference. China
based selected students (if located outside of Beijing) will be given a
lump sum of $500 for their travel to the conference. Costs of
accommodation in Beijing will be separately covered.
During their stay in
Beijing, successful applicants will:
 |
Attend a one day
workshop on October 16 where they will meet the other selected doctoral
students, present their doctoral research to other recipients and
receive feedback from 2-3 leading researchers in the field. |
 |
Attend the global
conference on October 17–19 where they will have the opportunity to hear
leading world thinkers, politicians, social entrepreneurs, and actors in
the development field discuss taking action for the world’s poorest and
hungry, and to contribute to the conference deliberations through active
participation in roundtable discussions and plenary interventions. |

over the world in any discipline who:
(i) have finished
their qualifying examinations and are currently conducting their PhD
